    Art Description:

Is from an ongoing series of large scale paintings on canvas based on small scale collages on paper called Pri-Merrrily Up-Stream. They are designed to mimic the cut and paste nature of papier colle. While this particular painting does incorporate a few passages of small montage elements it is mostly oil paint on a ground of yellow latex.

My point of departure is the literary device, alliteration which means -the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.- Top to bottom I've included berries, butt, boot, bow, blow, blues and a boat. The investigation into ‘sensating beyond simply seeing’ occurs in hearing these words spoken or thought aloud. The Pri-Merrrily Up-Stream paintings are intended to challenge rather please the viewer. The color schemes are somewhat garish or off-putting and the compositions are nonsensical. I quote from collage the formal quality of pastiche; I don’t hide or deny the seams that uneasily fit together instead I exaggerate the unwilling integration of disparate parts. In this tension I hope to sustain the restless life of the painting.

A body of work should not be a cadaver evidencing life that was but rather the flash-point for life which ignites anew on each renewed encounter.
