Creating art is an integral part of who I am. As I grow and evolve, so does my work.
I am at a point now where connection is what I seek and what drives me. And since my art is both a part of me as well as the embodiment of where I am, I am very excited to share it with the world. With my current series as well as all that led up to this, I am discovering the soul of my subjects and then expressing their magnificence as I know it really is.
With all my paintings, I always draw first, seeking the core meaning of whatever familiar subject I have chosen. In drawing I am unearthing whatever it is that has gotten my attention. And then I add the paint, relying on my own, personal color language fluency, the excitement of varying textures and creative intuition to create the emotional expression that is my art.
With my current series in which I am painting New York characters, each whose glorious soul I have discovered through a personal connection, my process feels just right still. These paintings are more than a portrait. They are an expression of that relationship. Each painting reflects not merely my bond with the subject, but rather anyone’s possible kinship with what they recognize emotionally. Each subject has a brilliant essence that is part of my New York. Specifically, the face and the hands present a depth of feeling and knowing that is what initially draws the viewer in. Then all the paint application with varied lines, deliberate form, as well as the empty, untouched spaces or abstracted moments allow the soul of my subject to appear. Angles, lines, shapes, spaces and lots of luscious, rich color and paint guide the viewer through each painting to find his or her own meaning in, and emotional connection with, these fabulous New York characters; everyday people who, if you just look, you can see how they genuinely shine.
This series feels so true to me. Creating art has always brought me joy. No matter how I might be feeling, my art inevitably ends up reflecting that joy. I am constantly being shaped by my art, using it to express myself and connect with the world wholeheartedly.
