Art Description:
In Paris at the Saint Ouen Flea Market an eccentric art dealer tried to persuade me that pastel was an exclusively French medium. I made a mental note to explore and pursue the medium when I returned to the the studio. While I had employed pastels here and there over time I'd done so with inexpensive brands. At the end of the summer 2019 I collected the best chalks available by Sennelier, Tony Ludwig, Richeson hand rolled etc. focused my attention on experimenting in modes of abstraction and figuration. Working with the rich buttery pastels inspired a kind of renaissance honeymoon with color. This particular piece is on linen wrapped board. It requires framing to be properly displayed. The pastel surface remained delicate even after being spray fixed but once safely behind glass these highly pigmented drawings remain lightfast and brilliant for years to come. Degas's pastels continue to glow like new 150 years later.
Medium Used: Pastel on linen covered board
