Ode to Joy is a transgressive declaration. It is about defying the gravity of setbacks and seasonal depression in favor of rising above sorrow and cynicism. Formally it a meditation on contrasting opposites within one frame; heavy vs. light, empty vs. full and abstract space vs. figure ground relationships. I always have this painting where I can see it. It's a bright beacon and reminder to reach for higher ground.
