The reference photo used for this painting had the word PROOF stamped on it. I bought the photo for a quarter in a Brooklyn junk shop and was immediately drawn to the double entendre of the word proof meaning literally a sample print but also the implication that these men were potentially up to shady underworld shenanigans.
