Art Description:
This piece was born from the frame it is in which was given to me when my framer closed shop. Working forward with the dimensions in mind I stretched a canvas to fit. Inspired by the seated figures of Richard Diebenkorn and Henri Matisse I asked my neighbor, Heidi if she would sit for a session of varied poses. The alternative photo shows one of several sketches made to secure the composition. Beyond these formal concerns I hoped to generate an image with extreme scale shifts to allude to monumentality. A larger than life figure in a moment of self reflection. Making her a painting within a painting being contemplated by a mother and child allowed for a meta-fiction to occur deepening and doubling the sense of inwardness which lengthens the unpacking process. Saint Someone is a ghost of contemporary youth searching outside themselves with a tiny device to apprehend the vastness of the world it mediates.
Medium Used: Oil on Canvas
