Art Description:
Two antique warriors symbolizing East and West are juxtaposed in this Pop art mash up representing tensions between U.S. and China. The cowboy characterizes an outmoded version of masculinity, his anger is based in the futility traditional machismo feels in the face of progress toward civility. The East is represented as an of image strength as decor on a ceramic symbolizing the fragile nature of the hegemony of masculine domination heading into the future. This type of work begins as a collage which I then use as a reference for painting. Part of the function of collage for me is a jolt of disparate elements refusing to integrate. It's not seamless; their disparity remains as unresolved tension. In this case the method echo the subject matter. The irresolute situation of ill fitting histories and ideologies into a continuous clash.
