I am a native New Yorker, having lived in Manhattan for almost my entire life. From a young child and all through my life I have been drawing. Originally, my subjects were my family members, friends, pets as well as familiar and beloved parts of my home. My drawings have naturally evolved to being much more refined, with grace and fine draftsmanship. I still am captivated by my world which of course has grown as I have. In addition to my own natural artistic inclinations, my mother was an Interior Designer and her first cousin was a famous, American painter; both influencing me to seek out what was in me. In my late 20’s, I took an oil painting class where I discovered color. Collectors then discovered me and I have been doing it ever since!
I am really drawn to art in so many of its forms; visual art, literature, film, sculpture, dance, theatre. As far as painting, I am most drawn to painterly work. My specific heroes are; Matisse for his flat picture plane and patterns, Alice Neel and Modigliani for their portrait figures, Van Gogh, Bonnard, and Gauguin for their color, de Kooning and Richard Diebenkorn for their abstracted figures, Morandi for the feeling I get when experiencing his art… etc!
When I create an image, I am looking for what has moved me. It could be something as simple as a line or a curve or as complicated as an emotion, mood or subtle familiarity. In all my work, I am conveying what has turned my own head and wowed me, sharing just that magnified for my viewers.
I have definitely changed my style over the years. I have evolved, becoming more proficient with my drawing abilities, more fluent with my color language and more graceful with the balance and design of my paintings. I am always happiest with where I am with my art so whenever I am asked this question, what I am doing with my art at that time is my favorite!
I love oil paint. I love the sloppiness of it. I love the richness of the colors. I love the layering that can happen with it. My favorite colors are transparent colors because they exaggerate all that I love about oil paint. They spread more, layer more and tend to be stunning in their colors and vibrancy. For drawing, I love the Conte Crayon. It is a wonderful tool that allows me to convey a broad array of gradations of dark. It is a tactile tool. I smudge with my hands. I blow dust across my paper. It is both hearty and soft and really an extension of me.
Artonique is an art platform with a slightly different focus. The art it carries is limited to a higher value point. My art tends to be quite large which naturally then is valued higher. It is a perfect forum for me to share my large, colorful, and unique paintings. It is able to give appropriate exposure and attention to an audience who is poised to receive it. Also, the team is very personable which makes working with them a really good experience.
