Art Description:
Two 24x30 inch canvases abut to form this 30x48 inch diptych. This piece was started as a mourning gesture for a favorite cat, Woodrow Willy Wilson. After Willy died I kept the painting open for many months returning with renewed mark-making and embedded collage elements. The short hatch marks refer to the ancient way of counting days.
As grief gave way to acceptance I changed the title from In Memory of My Feelings to The News Diptych as I'd changed the tone from austere and maudlin to colorful and life affirming. Formally the diptych employs the ppff (piano piano forte forte) with large expanses of quiet blank space surrounding heavily worked noisy passages. A logistical note: The piece is packaged/shipped with both canvases stacked together securely in one crate.
Medium Used: Oil, pencil drawings, newsprint and fabric on canvases
